The duration of a husband/wife visa varies depending on the origin of the partner. For a UK national, the period is two years, whilst EU citizens husbands and wives receive five year visas. There are a few anomalies for citizens of Poland, Latvia, Czech Republic and others whose countries only entered the European Union in May 2004.

Husbands and wives of citizens of these countries must show that they are not dependent on other people and cannot make claims on public funds.
