Driving License
Most overseas full driving licences are valid in the United Kingdom for one year from the date of arrival. After this period it is necessary to apply for a British driving license. Initially a provisional licence is issued and a car can only be driven whilst under the supervision of a full British Driving Licence holder of more than three years. Before receiving a full British Driving Licence both theory and practical tests must be taken and passed. More information can be found on the application form which is available from any post office.
Insurance to drive any motor vehicle in the United Kingdom is obligatory. The insurance usually belongs to one individual and not the vehicle however, an individual can add named drivers to their policy. Vehicle insurance can be purchased direct from insurance companies or through insurance agents either on the high street or online.
MOT (Ministry of Transport) annual road worthiness certificates are compulsory for all vehicles over three years old.
All vehicles whether cars, vans or motor cycles must be taxed and issued with a road fund licence in order to be used on the public highway. A road fund licence cannot be issued without valid insurance and MOT certificates.
